The medical suction catheter is a hollow tube inserted into the upper airway tract to expel mucus, saliva and other debris that blocks breathing. Instead of being inserted into the chest like an intercostal catheter, it discharges waste from the upper airway, trachea, and main bronchi. During suction, one end of the suction tube is connected to the suction machine or aspirator. The other end is then inserted into a trach tube to extract the secretions.

Benefits of using suction catheters
* Specially designed to remove secretions from the upper airway, trachea, and bronchi.
* Flexible and smooth so that the user experiences minimum pain while insertion.
* They are radiopaque and can be detected easily through scanning machines, thus enabling easy detection in the airway canal.

How to use the suction catheter?
* Wash your hands with soap and water.
* Turn on the suction machine and connect the suction connector to the main unit.
* Connect the clean suction duct to the suction connector.
* Ask the patient lie flat on the bed with a small towel rolled under his shoulder. Some patients can try sitting if they have to.
* Wet the suction tube with distilled water to lubricate it.
* Carefully insert the catheter into the nasal cavity, tracheostomy tube, or endotracheal tube.
* Continue to insert until appropriate depth is reached and apply intermittent suction. Do not place the catheter for more than 5-10 seconds or the patient will not be able to breathe normally.
* Withdraw the catheter slowly in a twirling motion.
* If you inhale more than once, allow the patient to recover from the inhalation and allow them to catch their breath. Wait at least 10 seconds.
* After removal, suck a small amount of distilled water with the catheter to remove residual debris or secretions.
* Close the suction machine and discard the suction catheter.

Precautions for using suction catheter
* Make sure your hands are clean in case of contaminating the catheter.
* While cleaning of the catheter, use only sterile or distilled water.
* Used catheters should be cleaned immediately to avoid infection.
* This suction catheter is disposable, which should be treated immediately as it may be biohazardous.
* Allow time for the patient to breathe.
