A BEMBRIDGE man who deliberately refused to provide a blood test at Newport Police Station after failing a roadside drugs swab, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates.

Craig Carey, of Crossways, admitted failing to provide a blood specimen for analysis, without reasonable excuse, on August 16, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Just before noon on the day in question, a police patrol pulled Carey over in West Street, Newport, to speak to him.

Concerned by Carey's demeanour, suspecting he had been drug driving, officers conducted a roadside drugs test.

Carey subsequently tested positive for cocaine and cannabis and was arrested, said Ann Smout, prosecuting.

At Newport Police Station, Carey deliberately refused to take a blood test for drugs.

For Carey, 35, Jim Osborne said his client had been fully co-operate with the police — up until his refusal to provide a blood sample.

Magistrates ordered a report on Carey, indicating although they would have considered a medium level probation order for him, they were unlkely to be sentencing him on his next attendance and left all options — including imprisonment — open to the next sentencing bench.

Carey was handed an interim driving ban and was bailed to reappear for sentencing at the same venue on October 7.
